About This Quote

Liberty is rendered even more precious by the recollection of servitude. In praising the Roman Republic, which was free from civil wars and foreign invasions, Cicero compared the Roman Republic with our own, stating that “that most excellent of all governments, the Roman Republic, was without a memory of past servitude”. This is not to say that we do not need to remember our past as a country and as a people. Our history and the sacrifices of those who came before us should be remembered and we should continue to learn from our history.

However, we should not be fearful of this remembrance and we should not allow it to hold us back from moving forward as a nation. The founding fathers of America established liberty as their primary goal and they intended for it to be everlasting.
